Note how far the seal is seated in the bore, then carefully pry it out with a screwdriver. Wrap the screwdriver tip with tape to avoid scratching the bore or damaging the camshaft.

Lubricate the outside diameter of the seal and install the seal over the end of the crankshaft, ensuring the lip of the seal points toward the engine. Preferably, use a seal installation tool to press the new seal back into place. If the tool is unavailable, use a large socket, section of pipe, or a blunt tool to carefully drive the new seal squarely into the seal bore and flush with the edge of the engine block.

Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and tighten it.

Using a seal driver or a socket with an outside diameter slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal, carefully drive the new seal into place with a hammer. Ensure that the seal lip is lubricated and that the seal is installed squarely and driven in flush with the surface of the timing chain cover. After installation, check the seal to make sure the spring didn't pop out of place.

The easiest method involves using a seal-removal tool. If this tool isn't available, a sharp knife can be used to cut the lip off the old seal while carefully avoiding scratching the crankshaft. After the lip is removed, a screwdriver wrapped with tape can be used to pry the seal out.
