To remove the water pump on 4-cylinder models, first disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system. Then, remove the timing belt and idler pulleys, alternator adjusting bar, and lower radiator hose. Remove the bolts from the water pump, noting their locations, and remove the pump and gasket. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces. To install, use new O-rings and gaskets, and tighten the bolts to torque specifications. Refill the cooling system and check for leaks. For V6 models, follow similar steps, but also remove the timing belt and camshaft sprockets, water inlet pipe and thermostat, and number 3 timing belt cover. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces and use a metal and rubber gasket for installation. Refill the cooling system and check for leaks.

Non-toxic coolant can be bought at the focal auto parts and is non-toxic only if it is new; used coolant needs to be disposed of properly. First, remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and then, drain the cooling system. For 2.4L models, discharge the following parts: right side inner fender splash shield, engine movement control rod and bracket, as well as the engine stay, drive belt and alternation. The water pump pulley has to be loosened first using a pin spanner, then the pulley has to be removed, the wiring harness has to be disconnected from the water pump and the water pump mounting fasteners removed before the pump is pried off the housing. Inspect all sealing area as well and fit the new water pump and fasten the screws up to the recommended torque . Fill the cooling system and operate the engine; see if it leaks. Weep or vent holes in water pumps are small holes that allow coolant to leak out if there is a failure in the pump seal.

Do not mistake drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump failure.

1. Remove the timing belt, camshaft sprockets, and the number 2 idler pulley. 2. Remove the number 3 timing belt cover. 3. Remove the water pump retaining bolts/nuts, and separate the pump from the engine. 4. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces, removing all traces of old gaskets, sealer, and O-rings. 5. Install a new metal and rubber gasket. 6. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the water pump bolts/nuts in several steps to the torque. 7. Refill the cooling system and run the engine, checking for leaks and proper operation.

It may be necessary to use a flashlight to find the hole on the water pump by looking through the space behind the pulley just below the water pump shaft.
