    Q:
How to reinstall the crankshaft on Lexus ES350? Posted by Customer
    A:
The crankshaft should be refitted with new main bearing cap bolts every time. The crankshaft can be removed easily only when the engine has been pulled out from the vehicle. If the crankshaft to be removed measure the end play using a dial indicator or feeler gauges as explained above. Remove the main-bearing cap bolts, and with a soft-faced hammer, knock on the caps to free them from the block. Finally and with the help of another person, raise slowly but carefully the crankshaft out of the engine block. Before mounting you should always clean the engine block and the crankshaft and check for defects. Scrape the bearing surfaces and oil holes, and place two sets of new upper and lower main bearing inserts. Place the crankshaft back into the cylinder block, and screw the main bearing caps in the correct manner with the bolts tightened. This is done by inserting plastigage between the main bearing caps and comparing the gap with the standard one. If necessary replace the bearing inserts with the correct size. Remove any of the plastigage material and polish the bearing surfaces. Transfer the engine oil on the bearings and fit the main bearing caps and fasten them to the appropriate recommended torque and rotating angle. Check crankshaft end float again and then attempt to turn the crankshaft with your hand to find out if it binds. Timken now has a supply of the part number 3345 new rear main oil seal which should be installed.

    Q:
What are the steps involved in the removal and installation of a crankshaft on Lexus RX330? Posted by Customer
    A:
Our method of crankshaft removal is to have the engine out of the car in the first place, assuming the removal of the driveplate, crankshaft pulley, timing belt/chain, oil pan, oil pump body, oil filter, piston/connecting rod assemblies. In particular, for V6 engines, the rear main oil seal retainer must be removed and detached from the block in the first place. The main bearing caps are secured to the V6 engines by four bolts as also by side bolts which go through the block into the main caps which are already in place. : Before and after the removal of the crankshaft, the endplay should be measured by aligning a dial indicator on the crankshaft. Place the lower end of the crankshaft as far to the rear as possible and set the dial indicator to zero, then place it to the front to take a reading, normally the endplay should be 0.003 to 0.010 inches. When a dial indicator is not available, a feeler gauge must be used as a means of measuring clearance. Turning the main bearing cap bolts slowly until they can be unscrewed by hand and turning the side bolts if the car is a V6. , but do not remove them too vigorously as this will cause the bearing inserts to fall out-remove the main bearing caps with a soft-face hammer. Remove the crankshaft from the engine, preferably with help , and place the main bearing caps back in their position on the engine block to face the front grille. For installation, position the engine block with the bottom facing up, remove the mounting bolts and main bearings caps and lift the latter off. Scrub the bearing surfaces and replace worn upper main bearing inserts in the block with a correct orientation of the thrust bearings in V6 and four-cylinder engines. Make sure that crankshaft is clean and the oil holes should also be free from dirt before laying the crankshaft down flat. Chck the main bearing oil clearance with the Plastigage and should be within the recommended limits. If clearance is not as specified, assure that they are clean then if necessary use different bearing inserts. Ensure that Plastigage material is eliminated before final assembly of any part of the piece. As earlier staged, clean the surface on the bearing insert and apply an annular layer of lubricant before positioning the crankshaft back on the cylinder block. Place all main bearing caps to the cylinder block and tap them as per the manufacturer's instructions tighten all bolts in a sequential manner. It is easier to rotate the crankshaft forward until the light press fits the thrust bearing although tightening the bolts should be done in stages. Check again the crankshaft endplay and give some crankshaft rotations to check if it binds, the crankshaft should rotate with running torque of 50 in-lbs or less. Last of all, fit a standard replacement rear main oil seal.
