    Q:
How to install a crankshaft during engine reassembly on Lexus ES300? Posted by Customer
    A:
Crankshaft installation is the first major step in engine reassembly. It is assumed that the engine block and crankshaft have been cleaned, inspected, and repaired or reconditioned. Position the engine with the bottom facing up. Remove the main bearing cap bolts and lift out the caps or cap assembly, laying them out in the proper order. Remove the old bearing inserts from the block and caps if they are still in place, and wipe the main bearing surfaces of the block and caps clean. Clean the back sides of the new main bearing inserts and lay them in the block and caps, ensuring the tab on each insert fits into the recess in the block or cap and the oil holes line up. Install the thrust bearings with the oil grooves facing out. Clean the faces of the bearings in the block and crankshaft main bearing journals, as well as the oil holes in the crankshaft. Carefully lay the crankshaft in position in the main bearings. Before permanently installing the crankshaft, check the main bearing oil clearance using Plastigage. Clean the faces of the bearings in the caps and install them with the arrows pointing toward the front of the engine. Tighten the main bearing cap bolts. Remove the bolts and lift off the main bearing caps or cap assembly, comparing the width of the crushed Plastigage on each journal to determine the main bearing oil clearance. Scrape off the Plastigage material from the main bearing journals and bearing faces. Carefully lift the crankshaft out of the engine, clean the bearing faces in the block, and apply a thin layer of clean moly-base grease or engine assembly lube to each bearing surface. Lubricate the crankshaft surfaces that contact the oil seals. Lay the crankshaft back in place in the block, install the caps with the arrows pointing toward the front of the engine, and install the thrust washers. Apply a light coat of oil to the bolt threads and undersides of the bolt heads, then install and tighten all main bearing cap bolts. Install a new pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft if applicable. Rotate the crankshaft by hand to check for any binding and check the crankshaft endplay. Install a new rear main oil seal and bolt the retainer to the block.
