Support the axle carrier with a floor jack.

Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and support the control arm with a floor jack.

Carefully place the coil spring onto the lower insulator, ensuring that the end of the spring rests in the lowest part of the insulator, fitting into the recessed portion.

If the struts or coil springs exhibit signs of wear such as leaking fluid, loss of damping capability, or physical damage, explore all options before beginning any work. The strut/shock absorber assemblies are not serviceable and must be replaced if a problem develops. Strut assemblies complete with springs may be available on an exchange basis, which can save time and effort. Always check the cost and availability of parts before disassembling your vehicle.

Remove the panels on the cowl to access the top of the struts and, for 2008 and later Highlander models, remove the windshield wiper arms and motor, side seals, and plastic cowl below the wiper motor assembly.

Lower the axle carrier with the jack, remove the two strut-to-axle carrier bolts, and then remove the strut assembly.
